10 Secrets to Reducing the Indoor Air Pollution in your Home

Indoor air pollution can come from a multitude of sources inside the home, including mould, damp, cooking emissions, candles, cleaning products and wood-fired heaters, just to name a few. However, it is also not just air pollutants created inside the home we have to be aware of. Outdoor air pollutants can also make their way into our homes; for example transport emissions, smoke from neighbouring wood heaters or barbecues.

With the amount of time spent inside our homes, it is very important that the air is as clean as possible. Just like outdoor air pollution, poor indoor air quality can pose a serious risk to the health and wellbeing of yourself and your family. I know as a mum, I love having peace of mind knowing I am making the very best choices for the health and safety of my little ones in our home.

After doing a big overhaul of the indoor air quality of my home, I wanted to share with you how I did it. After doing lots of research on the topic, I have found actioning these 10 things in my home has especially helped with the respiratory health of my little ones whilst also helping to keep my home clean and tidy:

1. Use a Doormat / Remove Shoes at the Front Door

Wiping shoes can reduce pollutants carried into the house. Better yet, establish a shoes-off policy.

2. Decorate your home with an abundance of Indoor Plants

Plants work wonderfully to get rid of toxins from the house. Besides, plants are one of nature’s gifts and are a great addition to your home decor. On top of that, plants don’t produce noise while purifying the indoor air from toxins. Examples of plants that can help in purification to reduce indoor air pollution include the English ivy, spider plant, Boston fern and peace lily.

3. Minimise Clutter & Clean Often

The clutter around our home can provide a home for the accumulation of dust which can carry bacteria, mould, mildew, pollen, mites and fungi. Regular dusting and cleaning should be done using environmentally friendly cleaning products. Minimise the clutter and you will minimise not only the amount you have to clean but also the ease of your clean. Also, ensure you vacuum often, especially if you have a pet. Brooms can just stir up more dust.

4. Cigarette smoke

If you can’t quit the habit, just make sure you smoke outdoors only.

5. Choose Environmentally Friendly Cleaners

Ensure your cleaning products contain no harsh, nasty ingredients that leave toxic residues around your home. Tri Nature’s eco-friendly cleaners keep your home clean without the need for harmful chemicals, fillers and extenders found in everyday cleaners – A safer and healthier option for your family and pets.

6. Diffuse Essential Oils

Tea Tree, Peppermint & Lemon Essential Oil are known for their potential antifungal agents and air quality benefits. I like to create a blend with a few drops of all three in my Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser after my big weekly clean. It makes my home smell divine whilst also improving air quality – Win-Win!

7. Wash your pets regularly

If you have pets, make sure you try and wash them and their bedding often to reduce allergy-causing fur. I use K9 Pro Dog Shampoo on my pooch, which is a naturally derived professional quality dog shampoo enriched with hydrolysed oats, amino acids and honey based conditioners. It gives your pet a glowing healthy coat, without stripping natural oils. Infused with the fresh and uplifting scent of essential oil based tangerine fragrance. It is also the best dog shampoo for soothing itchy irritated skin.

8. Change your Air Filters

Ensure you change the air filters in your air conditioner often, but especially when there is more smoke or pollen in the air. Alternatively give them a wash in Tri Nature’ Sphagnum Moss Disinfectant which is naturally derived and contains no nasty chemicals. This will not only improve the air quality in your home, but also extend their life of your machine and enable it work more efficiently.

9. Use a Dehumidifier

If it has been particularly damp, to reduce mould, keep moisture down by using a dehumidifier and cleaning the filter regularly with Tri Nature’ Sphagnum Moss Disinfectant.

10. Wash your Sheets, Pillowcases and Doona Cover regularly

Dust particles, toxins from the air and pet fur generally accumulate on bedding over time. Due to their very small size, they float around in the air and it’s easy to breathe them in even without knowing. Washing the bedding weekly in hot water is the best way of removing them while at the same time improving indoor air quality. Ensure you use a naturally derived washing powder that leaves no toxic residues behind. Tri Nature’s eco-friendly, phosphate-free, plant and mineral-based laundry powder continues to win awards time-and-time again for delivering exceptional economy, innovation and performance. It has recently been selected as an ABA100 Winner for Eco-Innovation in The Australian Brand Awards 2019.
