How to host a green Halloween party

Ready for a terrifying truth? Every Halloween, 2.5 million tonnes of waste are generated worldwide. In the U.S. alone, over 83 million Halloween costumes are purchased each year, most of which are made from non-recyclable materials and often discarded after just one use.

Feeling spooked yet? Here’s another: Americans buy around 600 million pounds of candy for Halloween, most of which is wrapped in plastic that can’t be recycled. These staggering numbers are a stark reminder of how much waste this holiday can generate. From costumes and candy wrappers to plastic decorations, Halloween can have a massive environmental impact if we aren’t mindful. That’s why now is the perfect time to start thinking about how we can make greener, more sustainable choices—starting with how we celebrate.

1. Send digital invitations

Skip the paper and go digital! Send eco friendly invites via email or Facebook. Not only does this cut down on paper waste, it also makes it easier to track RSVPs. Etsy has a range of very cute Halloween invitation templates. Such as this one from SocialSquareShop.

4. Serve homemade snacks

Try to avoid stocking up on too many sweet treats, as most packaging is still plastic. If you need store bought items, opt for those packaged in cardboard whenever possible.

Some examples of easy snacks you can make:

Devilled eggs
Eggshells can easily be composted and egg cartons recycled.

Caprese eyes
The more that fresh veg or herbs are used, the better! Most olives come in reusable or recyclable mason jars too.

5. Energy efficient lighting

To create a spooky ambiance while conserving energy, use natural wax candles like soy or beeswax for a haunting glow. These are biodegradable and eco friendly. Alternatively, opt for energy efficient LED lights, which use up to 75% less energy and come in festive Halloween colors. Solar powered LED lights are a great green option for outdoor settings!
